Another Racquetball Post...

The dedicated southpaws, Bruce Andrew and Bishop Rhett Jefferies played both days

A few of the High Priests here in our White Oak ward had indicated recently an interest in getting together to play racquetball. It struck me on Sunday that either MLK or Inauguration day would be perfect since many would be off work and that fortunately the YMCA would open for their regular hours both days. I threw it up for discussion on Sunday at the beginning of our meeting and had sufficient interest. Since some could make it one day but not the other we decided to just play both days and see what we'd get. People preferred early in the AM (7am) so that they could have the rest of the day open.

Nathan Nielson recently took a class, he takes his racquetball seriously

On Monday I did not play since I work my 3rd shift and am pretty blurry eyed by 7am on Mondays. Here are those who showed up: Rhett Jefferies, Garrett Jefferies, Bruce Andrew, Darryl Barksdale, Joe Rupp. This morning we had Bishop Thomas, Nathan Nielson, Joe Rupp, Rhett Jefferies, Bruce Andrew and me. We had fun, there were some good battles. We mostly just played singles having all three courts to ourselves, trading up after each match. Toward the end Bishop Thomas dropped out so we had a singles and a cutthroat court going.

Bishop Jeff Thomas said, "I'm out to get some exercise" and "not get hurt"

In retrospect, I wish I had brought my Nikon DSLR but I hate having to worry in the back of my mind about theft and what not when I'm trying to hang out with friends and play. So the compact Canon SD1000 was the back up and it just did not get the job done! Nevertheless, I'm posting the pics anyway. Joe and I were paired up to square off when I took these photos so I didn't get one of him. But so he doesn't feel left out, I'll go ahead and re-post this one of him from our recent New Beginnings YW activity.

Brother Rupp with his game face on!

It was enough fun that everyone said they'd be interested in doing it again soon.

I'm glad you made it back on the racquetball courts and it sounds like you had a great workout, too!!

I never thought about it, but those of you working in DC couldn't have arrived at your destination for anything, probably.

Nice to have 2 paid days off, but how was it going into your second job on Monday?

Are we truly in the last days, now?

Looking good gentlemen. I wish I could have joined you, though I would have been no match for your skills. - Dave Jennings

No problem getting in Monday Mom. I didn't get Tuesday paid off though. I could have worked but I didn't want to deal with traffic. Turns out it was probably a better traffic day than normal since it was mostly people bussing in and all. But I was happy to have a day off :)

Dave, I noticed that you have a few nice Head racquets, the same that I use as my backup racquet, they're nice. So if you know a good racquet, my guess is you're game is better than you are letting on...

It's great to see so many of the guys! Everyone looks great. I had no idea you enjoyed racquet ball either! I took squash lessons and racquet ball lessons for years! I didn't play when we lived in Virginia (except with my dad when we visited them in W'burg) I wish I would have known there were some players!

Garity, next time you and your dad are in town, bring it! I once drove from OC California to the middle of the desert in Nevada to meet one of my missionary companeros half way (he was coming from AZ) to play a handful of games and turn around and go back. We had never played, I never even knew that he played. He had been talking smack to me via email when he discovered I played (only within the past few years), and of course I was dishing it right back at him and so when I flew to CA for a wedding, I worked that little desert trip in.

He and I were pretty even, I was quite impressed because I thought I was going to smoke him (I mean come on, he was my junior companion...). Every game was close though and any one of the first three that really mattered could have gone either way. Now neither of us talks smack on the other... Of course if he starts anything, I'll have to dish it back, right??? The trip for me was well worth it.

The cool thing was that by the time we were finished, there were half a dozen or more locals of that po-dunk town that had watched us and may have revered us as semi pros or something, and they were eager for us to stay and play with them. Unfortunately I had tight agendas that involved weddings in other states and what not...
